Nichiyo-ichi (Sunday Market)

Nichiyo-ichi ( 'Nichiyo' means 'Sunday' , 'Ichi' means 'Market' ), which is held every Sunday for 1km along Otesuji-street in the city center. It has a history of 300 years and there are a variety of goods, antique, food, farm products, snack, garden trees and garden rocks. There are lots of other markets as well, on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in Kochi prefecture. But the Sunday Market along the Otesuji-street is the oldest and biggest one. It is opened from sunrise to an hour before sunset. It is usually busy in the afternoon so I recommend, you go there, in the morning.

Kochi castle is in the upper-left corner of the map. A street from the castle to the right is Outesuji-street.

Pedestrian mall
Every Sunday, cars aren't allowed through Outesuji-street during the market. These trees are subtropical. And they creat an exotic southern stmosphere.

You can buy just about anything you want except for PC and raw fish! Dogs and cats used to be sold in the past and my friend from Osaka couldn't believe it was in Japan.

Yakitori shop. Yakitori is grilled chicken like shish kebab.
center:
Drink stand. You can buy Hiyashi-ame('Hiyashi' means 'cold' and 'ame' means 'candy'). Hiyashi-ame is an old-fashioned drink and the stands are still common in western Japan. It is made with suger, honey, ginger, starch, syrup and water.
