The weather was getting a bit better and I took a train headed to the Gornergrat which is one of the most popular places for tourists in Switzerland.
The top of the Gornergrat can be reached by the Gornergratbahn cog railway from the town of Zermatt. Trains depart every 24 minutes from the Gornergrat Bahn train station which is across the street from the main train station. It's easy to access.
The train makes a brief stop at several stations on the way and it eventually goes to a height of 3089m, Gornergrat.
The 45 minute ride will bring you from Zermatt(1620m) to the Gornergrat vantage platform!
From there you can overlook the second largest glacier in the Alps "Gorner Glacier" to the south, and you can also get panoramic views of the various 4000m peaks including the Matterhorn if the weather is nice.
Hiking from the top of the Gornergrat to one of the way stations is a very popular hiking method. The area is above tree line so there is a wild, rugged landscape without trees. It might be much different from what the Japanese expect from Switzerland. But if the weather is clear, you can enjoy hiking with a full view of the Matterhorn before you.
Zermatt is a small town and there is nothing to do in the town but go to the mountain. When the weather is bad, you might have a lot of time on your hands, especially if you travel alone.
I'd had bad weather for the last 3 days but it was about time the weather cleared up! I really wanted tomorrow to be sunny!!
