I was up early that morning for my hiking but the weather was bad with a dense fog and rain. I wasn't such a serious hiker as to hike in a rain so I changed my plan. I decided to visit a popular destination, Bern.
It is about 2 hours train trip from Muerren to Bern.
Bern is the capital city of Switzerland and it's the 5th most populous city in Switzerland with a population of 125,681.
The capital city of Switzerland is Bern, not Zurich and not Geneve.
I would say most Japanese don't know that Bern is the capital city of Switzerland even if the Japanese people know the local speciality of Switzerland, cheese fondue! I would bet on it.
Bern has been on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1983 and thousands of tourists visit the town from around the world every year.
One of the tourist attractions is the bear park "Baerenpark".
From the train station it was a nice leisurely walk to the park. It is on the other side of the river. I heard that one of the origins of the town name "Bern" comes from the word "bear".
For your information, now there are no wild bears anywhere in Switzerland, therefore you can enjoy hiking without fear of meeting them by chance!
When arriving back at my hotel in the evening, it was still horrible weather and on top of that, it started to thunder. I was really worried about the next day's weather....
