Mainz is very close to Frankfurt International Airport so you can easily go there by train. For that reason, Mainz is a convenient city as a final destination from a German trip.
Mainz is a beautiful city with over two thousand years of history. It was a more modern city than I expected for a German historical town and Mainz wasn't so attractive for me.
Mainz isn't so big and it is convenient to walk around.
There are many interesting monuments in the market square, which is located in the center of the old city part of Mainz. One of them, is a bronze statue of Johannes Gutenberg, who was born in Mainz and, is credited with inventing the printing press.
Mainz is located on the Rhine river across from Wiesbaden and it is a city situated just on the bank of of the river. I had nothing special to do in Mainz and I wandered around heading to the Rhine river.
After a short walk away from Mainz Cathedral, you will come to a broad expanse of the river. It is the Rhine river. You can take a Rhine river cruise from this small boat pier.
There are lots of shady trees which are lined along the river and there are many benches too. It is a nice place to relax while watching the boats on the river and the airplanes leaving from Frankfurt International Airport.
I got a city map of Mainz at a tourist information office and I found a good Thai restaurant on it. I took lots of time to look for the restaurant but finally, I arrived. I half expected that...Evidently, I have no sense of direction!
As soon as I got back to my hotel, after having a delicious Thai meal, there was a sudden change in the weather! The cloudless sky turned dark and I heard a terrible thunderstorm with big thunderclaps. Germany was experiencing record high temperatures in the summer, like Japan. These few years, Japan has often experienced record breaking storm rainfall because of intense summer heat. I think that something is happening to the Earth....
