Munster platz
Is a square in the heart of Ulm and it is in front of the Ulm's cathedral, which is known locally as the "Ulm Minster". The church is not hard to find at all. The Ulm Minster has the world's highest church steeple(161.5 meters). Somehow you can't avoid it, you will see the spire from everywhere.
Ulm Minster
Many people mistake Kolen's Dom(157 meters) as the highest church in the world but actually Ulm Minster is a little bit taller. As I expected, the Ulm Minster with the highest spire was a huge building and I couldn't take a panoramic photo of it.
The beautiful facade is not the only thing the church can offer. Another feature is the viewing platform on the top of the steeple.
There is a spiral staircase and it takes 768 steps to reach the platform! Visitors can climb the 768 steps up to the platform for a small fee.
The entrance of the spiral staircase is in the church and it leads up from the bottom to the very top of the steeple.
As I was climbing up the narrow spiral staircase turning around in the same direction, it made my head dizzzy.
I was getting nervous about insecure windows.... Though the stone framed windows along the staircase are big, they are only protected by a creaky fence, and there isn't any handrail. In addition, there aren't any rest spots. So if I miss a step, I would tumble down the stairs to the VERY bottom of the tower. I am not afraid of heights but this situation made my knees shiver!
The views on my way to the top level were interesting.
Everything on the ground looked a lot like a toy!
Climbing up the 140-meter spire was very hard for me. I don't have good strength to walk up the 768 steps and I don't have lots of energy to climb up the steeple in the middle of summer!
This is the 2nd level entrance into the very top of the steeple. Of course, when I reached that entrance I was already completely exhausted. I even thought of giving up climbing to the viewing deck.
The staircase at this level is very open. I felt my blood run cold.
Surprisingly, visitors are allowed to climb up almost to the very top. As you can see, a viewing deck is just under the top of the spire!
Here is the viewing platform at 143 meters from the ground.
The aisle was very narrow, at most 50cm wide and I was so terrified!
You can see the interesting building decorations around the top of the spire.
From the very top level of the spire at 143 metres, you can see almost every building in the city, as well as a good panoramic view towards the surrounding mountains.
All the time I was walking down to the bottom of the tower, my knees were shaking. After stepping out onto the ground, I was lost in abstraction for a while. People say "The viewing platform is well worth a vist." but I'll never climb up the spire again.
Climbing up and down the 768-steps staircase for 4 euro admission fee and with the fear of rolling down doesn't pay! "The church is definitely worth a look." That's all I have to say.
